The Photography Program at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) stands as one of the most historic and respected in the world, having been established more than a century ago. Building upon this pioneering legacy, the program continues to evolve with the ever-changing landscape of image-making, embracing both traditional and digital practices. Students are encouraged to explore a range of photographic approaches, mastering technical proficiency while developing their individual artistic voices. From analog darkroom processes to cutting-edge digital technologies, the curriculum provides a comprehensive foundation in both the technical and conceptual dimensions of photography.

At the core of the program are the introductory courses *Light & Color: Digital Photo I* and *Shadows & Time: Film Photo I*, where students gain essential skills in camera operation, exposure, and image composition. As they progress, courses such as *Reimagining the Darkroom*, *Studio & Location Lighting*, and *Digital Materials & Methods* expand their creative and technical capacities. MICA’s photography students also study the medium’s broader cultural and historical contexts through *History of Photography* and *Contemporary Directions*, connecting classic traditions with emerging ideas and artists.

The curriculum emphasizes professional development alongside creative exploration. The *Professional Strategies* course prepares students for careers in photography by covering grant writing, marketing, and business practices. Independent study and mentorship come to the forefront in the *Junior Seminar* and *Senior Thesis*, where students define their artistic direction and produce cohesive final projects. Electives such as *Photographic Book*, *The Body in Photography*, and *Alchemy of Light* offer specialized opportunities for experimentation.

MICA’s world-class facilities include digital print labs, film scanning rooms, a professional lighting studio, and darkrooms for traditional and alternative processes. The program also operates the Wilgus Gallery, a student-run exhibition space that encourages curatorial and professional practice. Through internships and active engagement in Baltimore’s art community, MICA photography students graduate with refined skills, critical insight, and a strong foundation for success in the contemporary art and media world.
