Founded in 1979, The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) in Los Angeles stands as a pioneering institution rooted in the vision of artists themselves. As the only artist-founded museum in the city, MOCA has remained true to its mission: to collect, present, and interpret contemporary art in all its forms, focusing on works created since 1940. Its commitment to bold ideas and new perspectives has positioned it as a vital force in the cultural life of Los Angeles and beyond.

MOCA's collection has grown to nearly 8,000 objects, encompassing painting, sculpture, photography, installation, video, and performance. These works reflect the dynamic and evolving narratives of the contemporary world, making MOCA’s holdings among the most compelling in the field. Over the years, the museum has earned a reputation for organizing groundbreaking exhibitions that not only showcase major artists but also introduce audiences to emerging voices that shape the conversation in contemporary art.

MOCA operates across two main venues: MOCA Grand Avenue in the heart of downtown Los Angeles, and The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA in the Little Tokyo neighborhood, which offers expansive space for large-scale installations and experimental projects. Additionally, MOCA is the steward of *Double Negative* (1969–70), Michael Heizer’s monumental land art piece located in the Nevada desert.

Beyond exhibitions, MOCA engages the public through a diverse range of educational programs, artist talks, performances, and publications. These efforts reflect the museum’s deep belief in the power of art to provoke thought and foster dialogue.
