Established in 1900, the MFAH has grown into an expansive institution with a campus that stretches across several blocks in the heart of Houston’s Museum District. The museum’s collection spans more than 6,000 years of history and encompasses nearly every corner of the globe. Visitors encounter art ranging from the ancient civilizations of Egypt, Greece, and Rome to the rich traditions of Africa, Asia, and the Americas. European painting and sculpture are represented through works by masters such as Rembrandt, Monet, and Van Gogh, while the museum’s holdings of modern and contemporary art include pieces by pioneering figures like Picasso, Rothko, and Warhol. Its campus includes the Audrey Jones Beck Building, the Caroline Wiess Law Building, the Glassell School of Art, and the Nancy and Rich Kinder Building, which opened in 2020 as a major new space for modern and contemporary works.
