The Turchin Center for the Visual Arts stands as a vibrant hub for creativity and community engagement in downtown Boone, North Carolina. Established in 2003 as part of Appalachian State University’s mission to enrich its cultural offerings, the center transformed a historic King Street church into the largest visual arts facility in northwestern North Carolina, Eastern Tennessee, and Southwest Virginia.

The center’s galleries, education spaces, and outdoor installations offer a welcoming environment for students, residents, and visitors to experience contemporary visual art in meaningful and accessible ways. With the addition of the east wing in 2008 and the Arnold P. Rosen Family Education Wing, the Turchin Center has expanded its capacity to host a wide variety of exhibitions, workshops, and outreach programs.

Named in honor of Robert and Lillian Turchin, longtime supporters of the university, the center emphasizes creative thinking as an essential component of education and community life. It has received national recognition for its programming, including support from institutions like The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. This acknowledgment highlights the center’s ongoing commitment to showcasing significant works and nurturing artistic dialogue in the region.

More than just a gallery, the Turchin Center serves as a cultural crossroads, connecting the university with the broader community through shared experiences in the arts.
