Photography West Gallery, nestled in the heart of Carmel-by-the-Sea, has been a dedicated champion of traditional photographic craftsmanship since its founding in 1980. Born from the shared vision of four passionate photographers—Brett Weston, Ron C. James, Claudette Bargreen Dibert, and Carol E. Williams—the gallery quickly carved out a unique space within the West Coast photography scene. For over four decades, it has served as a haven for artists who remain committed to analog photography and classical darkroom techniques.

Photography West Gallery celebrates the hands-on artistry of wet-process photography. Its curated exhibitions spotlight photographers who meticulously craft their work without the use of digital technologies or pigment-based printing. These artists often mix their own chemistry and construct custom equipment, forging a deeply personal connection with their materials and methods. The gallery has helped introduce many now-renowned photographers to the art world, offering some of their earliest exhibitions and continuing to support their evolving careers.

Today, the gallery is owned and operated by Julia Christopher, daughter of co-founder Carol Williams. Under her leadership, Photography West has preserved its founding spirit while embracing a broader audience. Julia has expanded the gallery’s reach through a unique online platform devoted exclusively to education and appreciation of wet-process photography, continuing its mission to support both the medium and the artists who practice it.

The gallery's intimate space and focused curatorial approach provide a distinctive, immersive experience for visitors and collectors alike.
