Viewpoint Photographic Art Center, located in midtown Sacramento, has grown from a small community initiative into a vital hub for photographers and photography enthusiasts. Originally conceived over thirty-five years ago by Jeff Redman and Jim Galvin as part of their Lightwork camera store, the gallery was intended from the beginning as a way to give back to the photographic community. Over the decades, this vision has evolved into a full-fledged nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering the appreciation, creation, and study of photography at all levels.

Photography lies at the heart of Viewpoint’s mission. The gallery maintains a rich and diverse collection that spans a wide spectrum of photographic practice, including traditional, experimental, and contemporary approaches. Both established and emerging artists are regularly showcased, providing visitors with opportunities to encounter work ranging from documentary and portraiture to abstract and conceptual photography. By presenting exhibitions that reflect the depth and breadth of the medium, Viewpoint emphasizes photography as a dynamic art form capable of engaging social, cultural, and aesthetic discourse.

Beyond exhibitions, Viewpoint offers extensive programming designed to cultivate artistic growth and community engagement. Its two galleries host monthly shows, accompanied by workshops, lectures, field trips, and peer-to-peer reviews. Educational outreach programs connect with local colleges and high schools, fostering the next generation of photographers. The organization also hosts Photography Month Sacramento, the region’s largest photographic event, which draws artists, collectors, and the public together to celebrate the medium.
