Pioneer Works is a vibrant cultural hub located in Red Hook, Brooklyn, where art, science, and community come together in an innovative and inclusive environment. Founded in 2012 by artist Dustin Yellin and guided by a diverse team of visionaries, including astrophysicist Janna Levin and founding artistic director Gabriel Florenz, the center is dedicated to fostering experimentation and collaboration across disciplines.
Housed in a restored 19th-century brick building once home to Pioneer Iron Works, the space now features three expansive floors of studios, labs, exhibition areas, and performance venues. It serves as a creative playground for artists, scientists, technologists, musicians, and educators. By encouraging interdisciplinary exchange, Pioneer Works offers a model that breaks down conventional boundaries and reimagines how knowledge and creativity are shared.
The organization runs a robust lineup of public programs, artist residencies, exhibitions, and performances, with a strong focus on accessibility—many offerings are free and open to all. Educational initiatives range from hands-on workshops for youth and adults to immersive STEAM programs for schools, while Pioneer Works Broadcast extends its reach through a digital platform showcasing original content and ideas.
Sustainability, equity, and community engagement are central to the institution’s ethos. Whether through its flourishing garden, inclusive hiring practices, or pay equity for creatives, Pioneer Works emphasizes long-term impact. The center is deeply rooted in Red Hook, working closely with neighborhood organizations and residents to reflect the spirit and resilience of its surroundings.
With curiosity as its compass and collaboration as its foundation, Pioneer Works nurtures an environment where people from all walks of life can come together to create, learn, and inspire. It's not just a space—it’s a movement toward a more open and imaginative world.
