Gallery ‘Iolani, located on the Windward Community College campus in Kāne‘ohe, Hawai‘i, has grown to become one of the most respected exhibition spaces in the state. Since its founding in 1985, the gallery has been a cultural hub, presenting diverse and thought-provoking exhibitions that span local, national, and international artistic communities. With a mission rooted in cultural and educational enrichment, Gallery ‘Iolani continues to serve as a bridge between artists and the broader public.

The gallery began modestly in the basement of Hale ‘Iolani, created by a passionate group of faculty and students determined to provide a platform for the arts despite limited resources. Its transformation began in 1991 when Toni Martin was appointed gallery director. Under her guidance, the gallery flourished, with each semester bringing new and engaging exhibitions that reflect the rich tapestry of human experience.

In 2001, the gallery moved into a new 1,700-square-foot space adjacent to Palikū Theatre as part of the Center for the Arts and Humanities. This state-of-the-art facility allowed for expanded programming, dynamic exhibition layouts, and a more immersive experience for visitors. Over the years, it has hosted artists from across the Hawaiian Islands and around the globe, including Japan, Korea, France, and the mainland United States.

Gallery ‘Iolani also plays a vital educational role. It functions as a learning lab for students studying gallery design and management, offering hands-on experience in the curation and production of professional exhibitions. Through artist talks, lectures, and community events, the gallery fosters dialogue and creative engagement.

Recognized by the Honolulu Star-Advertiser as one of "Hawai‘i’s Best" in 2020, Gallery ‘Iolani remains a vibrant center for artistic expression, open to people of all backgrounds, ages, and cultures.
