Photobook Fest 2026 returns to the International Center of Photography from May 8 to 10, transforming the institution into one of the most active meeting points for contemporary photobook culture in the United States. Now in its fifth edition, the three-day event has quickly established itself as a major gathering for photographers, publishers, students, and collectors, bringing together more than 75 publishers from around the world. Spanning the museum and school on Manhattan’s Lower East Side, the festival reflects the growing recognition of the photobook as both an artistic medium and a vital form of independent publishing.

Far more than a traditional book fair, Photobook Fest emphasizes exchange and discovery. Visitors move through tables filled with newly released monographs, artist books, zines, and experimental editions, encountering projects that range from documentary narratives to conceptual works and self-published investigations. ICP’s Community Table highlights books by alumni, faculty, students, and staff, with all proceeds going directly to the artists. This direct relationship between maker and audience reinforces one of the central values of photobook culture: accessibility, conversation, and the physical experience of holding the work in one’s hands.

The 2026 edition also expands beyond publishing through its “Off the Page” Project Spaces and dedicated reading rooms. Magnum Foundation presents Twin Cities: Held Together, featuring work by Drew Arrieta, Jaida Grey Eagle, Tim Evans, and others, while Conveyor Editions showcases Magali Duzant’s A Tree, A Garden. Reading rooms curated in collaboration with the Center for Book Arts and other partners invite visitors to slow down and engage with books as objects of study rather than quick consumption. Selections curated by photographer Christian Patterson further deepen this archival and tactile experience.

Following the festival, ICP opens a major photobook exhibition on June 11, running through the end of September, surveying the last 25 years of the form in the United States. Together, the festival and exhibition position the photobook not as a secondary extension of photography, but as a central site of artistic experimentation. At a moment when images circulate faster than ever on screens, Photobook Fest 2026 reaffirms the lasting power of printed photographs to create intimacy, memory, and lasting dialogue.
