Since 1998, when the Taipei Fine Arts Museum first invited an international curator and renamed its exhibition the Taipei Biennal, the event has become a vital force in connecting Taiwan’s contemporary art with the global stage. The Biennale’s evolution mirrors the city’s own transformation—a journey marked by openness, experimentation, and growth.

At its core, the Taipei Biennal seeks to situate contemporary art within the flow of an interconnected world. It serves as a platform where artists, thinkers, and audiences can meet without predetermined ideologies, exploring the shared threads between aesthetics, ethics, and society. Through this framework, the Biennale has created a dynamic two-way exchange between local and international communities, fostering both reflection and renewal within Taiwan’s cultural landscape.

Throughout its history, the Taipei Fine Arts Museum has encouraged curatorial freedom and conceptual flexibility, allowing each edition of the Biennale to reinvent itself. Looking toward the future, the aim remains clear: to expand dialogue, exchange ideas, and deepen connections between art and the local context while sustaining a meaningful global conversation.

The 14th edition, titled Whispers on the Horizon, opens on November 1, 2025, at the Taipei Fine Arts Museum. Curated by Sam Bardaouil and Till Fellrath, co-directors of the Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin, it gathers 52 artists from 35 cities, presenting 33 newly commissioned works and site-specific installations. The exhibition reflects on the idea of longing—not as nostalgia, but as a tension between memory and desire, between what is lost and what might yet be found.

Through film, performance, sculpture, and immersive installations, Whispers on the Horizon invites visitors into a contemplative space of resonance and vulnerability.
