Lagos and Ibadan
Lagos and Ibadan, Nigeria

Under the artistic direction of Azu Nwagbogu, founder of the African Artists’ Foundation, the 2025 LagosPhoto Biennial explores the theme “Incarceration”, examining visible and invisible forms of captivity that shape personal, political, and collective life.

After fifteen years of fostering critical dialogue through photography, LagosPhoto enters a new chapter as a biennial event, running from October 25 to November 29, 2025, across Lagos and Ibadan. The expanded format invites deeper reflection and a wider range of creative expressions through solo exhibitions, collaborations, screenings, and talks.

The 2025 edition investigates how confinement—whether physical, psychological, or ideological—defines modern existence and how images can resist, expose, or reimagine systems of control. Photography’s dual role in both oppression and liberation is at the heart of this exploration, highlighting the medium’s potential to reclaim narratives and visibility.

Featuring artists from Africa and the global diaspora, the biennial includes works by Yagazie Emezi, Shirin Neshat, Cesar Dezfuli, Stefan Ruiz, Geremew Tigabu, and others, spanning photography, film, textiles, archives, and installation.

Marking LagosPhoto’s transformation into a biennial, this edition renews its mission to spark dialogue on freedom, resistance, and the power of images to transform how we see—and imagine—the world.
