The Bronx Documentary Center presents Emerging Visions: Photo Education Around the World, on view from 1 October through 30 October 2026 at the BDC Annex, 364 East 151st Street in the Bronx. Curated by Michael Kamber, the exhibition brings together organizations from around the world to explore the transformative power of photography education, highlighting both student photographs and the work that happens behind the camera—from teaching methods and mentorship to the practical tools used to build each groundbreaking program.

The show features work from twelve organizations, including Efothô in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Documenting Detroit in Michigan, Fotokids in Guatemala, ICP at The Point in New York, Las Fotos Project in California, Magnum Foundation in New York, NYC Salt in New York, Pathshala South Asian Media Institute in Bangladesh, Photoville in New York, The VII Foundation in France and Bosnia & Herzegovina, Vermont Center for Photography in Vermont, and the Bronx Documentary Center's own Youth Photo League. Each organization represents a different approach to fostering creativity, strengthening communities, and amplifying underrepresented voices through visual storytelling.

The exhibition arrives as part of the Bronx Documentary Center's 15th Anniversary celebration, alongside Built in the Bronx: 15 Years of the Bronx Documentary Center on view in the 614 Gallery. Founded in 2011, BDC has become a cornerstone of documentary photography in New York City, offering exhibitions, educational programs, and community engagement initiatives. The Youth Photo League, one of the center's flagship programs, provides free photography education to young people in the South Bronx, many of whom have never held a camera before entering the classroom.

Las Fotos Project, founded in Los Angeles in 2010, uses photography and mentorship to empower teenage girls and gender-expansive youth, helping them build confidence, leadership skills, and creative voices. Pathshala South Asian Media Institute, established in Dhaka in 1994, has trained generations of photographers, filmmakers, and journalists across Bangladesh and the broader South Asian region. Fotokids, based in Guatemala City since 1993, teaches photography and digital media to children from marginalized communities, many of whom have experienced violence, poverty, or displacement.

The collaborative exhibition demonstrates how access to photography education can create opportunities for the next generation of visual storytellers. In an era when images circulate at unprecedented speed and scale, these programs offer young people the tools to shape their own narratives rather than remain subjects of others' framing. The work on display ranges from intimate portraits and street scenes to documentary projects addressing social justice, environmental change, and cultural identity. Together, the photographs reveal not only what emerging photographers see but how they have been taught to look.
