Candela Photo Arts in Richmond, Virginia presents Tommy Kha: Facades, on view from 4 September through 24 October 2026, a selection of images by Brooklyn-based artist and 2025 Guggenheim Fellow Tommy Kha. The exhibition continues Kha's practice of collaborative, multi-generational work wherein the artist is both photographer and performer, exploring identity through quarter- and half-self-portraits that map the Asian Diaspora against landscapes marked by trauma and violence from his mother's generation.

"I see my body as a limited space extending its narratives outside of it through familial relationships and identity politics," Kha has written. "Thus, my work is a mapping of Asian Diaspora, which may be a possible space my queerness figures into against landscapes that are a result of trauma and violence from my mother's generation." The photographs take the form of living collages, forgoing digital manipulation in favor of physical layering in-camera through cut outs, markmaking, masks, and wallpapers.

Born in Memphis, Tennessee, Kha holds an MFA in Photography from Yale University, where he currently teaches as a critic. He is a 2025 Guggenheim Fellow, previously a recipient of the Hayes Prize, Next Step Award, Foam Talent, and NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellow. He has had solo shows at Higher Pictures, Baxter St. at the Camera Club of New York, and Blue Sky Gallery. His work has appeared in the New York Times Magazine, Aperture, the New Yorker, among other publications.

Kha's first major publication, Half, Full, Quarter, was published by Aperture in February 2023. The title references his three photographic series: the collaboration series with his mother (Half), the "Facades" series of "cut-up pictures" (Full), and the photographs his mother took while in Canada (Quarter). The book brings together photographs made over the past decade, offering what has been described as "the highly personal psycho-geography of his hometown."

Currently, Kha studies kung fu under Sifu Ken Lo. He joined Higher Pictures in 2022. His first museum show, Other Things Uttered, opened at the Addison Gallery of American Art in Andover, Massachusetts in September 2025. Candela Photo Arts is located at 214 West Broad Street in Richmond's Arts District in Jackson Ward. The gallery will host a conversation with Kha on Thursday, 4 October at 6 p.m., and a small print bingo event on Saturday, 24 October from 1 to 5 p.m., marking the exhibition's closing day.
