The Houston Center for Photography presents In the Between, on view from 17 September through 8 November 2026, an exhibition that gathers six artists whose practices explore uncertainty, memory, displacement, and transformation. The show examines what it means to inhabit the threshold between histories, identities, and emotional terrains, treating the "between" not as a location but as an atmosphere where boundaries dissolve and meaning remains unsettled.

Brigitte Bourger, based in French Polynesia, explores literal estuaries where shifting water and submerged landscapes become repositories for accumulated time. Her aerial photographs capture coastlines and tidal zones as fluid expressions of light and texture, shaped by natural forces. The work lies at the intersection of geography, environmental awareness, and contemporary aesthetics, balancing representation and abstraction.

Ksenia Ivanova examines borders as psychological and emotional conditions that fracture communities and collective memory. Her series Between the Trees documents Abkhazia, a Georgian territory occupied by Russia, mapping the official structures of control and everyday forms of survival on both sides of the border. The work won the Lucie Foundation Documentary Scholarship and was named a finalist for the Leica Oskar Barnack Award.

Luis Javier Maguiña's Those Who Continue to be Named, created for The Aftermath Project, inhabits the suspended space between mourning and justice in Peru. Following the 2022-2023 protests and state repression, the project accompanies families of those who lost their lives, exploring how grief transforms and persists. Maguiña was a finalist for the 2026 Gabo Award and nominated for the Joop Swart Masterclass by World Press Photo.

Gary Burnley's Stranger(s) in the Village, borrowing its title from James Baldwin's essay, merges disparate histories through collage, positioning Black identity within the unstable space between visibility and erasure. A 2022 Guggenheim Fellow, Burnley creates amalgamations that shift familiar narratives toward unexpected readings. Ronit Porat uses archival imagery and collage to occupy the uncertain terrain between documentary evidence and constructed memory, focusing on Weimar Germany and women artists. Stephanie Shih examines in-betweenness through still life and food imagery that situate diasporic identity between inherited cultural histories and contemporary Asian American experience.

Rather than offering resolution, the exhibition embraces ambiguity as a generative condition. Landscapes, archives, portraits, and objects become sites where histories overlap, identities shift, and grief and renewal coexist in continual transformation. An artist panel conversation takes place on 17 September, with a curatorial tour led by HCP Executive Director Anne Leighton Massoni on 24 October.
