Perspective Gallery presents William Bridges: MY Photographic Memory?, on view from 3 to 27 September 2026, an exhibition that reimagines the relationship between recollection and the photographic image. Bridges challenges the notion of photographic memory as perfect recall, proposing instead that everyone carries visual memories shaped by individual perception and the passage of time.

The work emerged from an unconventional trajectory. Bridges studied architecture as an undergraduate before departing the visual arts for thirty-six years to earn a PhD and build a career as a professor of sociology at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He returned to artistic practice at the Evanston Art Center, progressing from basic darkroom techniques to advanced digital courses. This late reengagement with photography informs the contemplative quality of the images on display.

Bridges works primarily in a documentary mode, avoiding the directorial approach that stages scenes for the camera. His photographs function as records of how memory appears in the mind—not as crystallized pictures of the past, but as impressions that shift and soften with recall. The exhibition title's question mark signals this uncertainty, inviting viewers to consider their own mnemonic landscapes alongside the artist's.

As a founding member of Perspective Gallery, Bridges helped establish the cooperative in 2010 and served on its board of directors for its first decade. The gallery, located on Chicago Avenue in Evanston, remains the only dedicated photography space in the suburb, operating as a community-oriented venue for fine art photography. His work has appeared in numerous shows there, as well as in juried exhibitions across Chicago's northern suburbs and in the Chicago Reader.

The exhibition runs alongside Maria Finitzo: Ice and Light, with an artists' talk scheduled for 17 September. Together, the shows reflect Perspective Gallery's commitment to presenting work that examines perception, place, and the ways photographs mediate between external reality and internal experience. Bridges' contribution asks viewers to reconsider what photographic memory might mean when stripped of its promise of perfection.
