IN GRAY, on view at Multiple Exposures Gallery from September 1 to October 11, 2026, presents Soomin Ham's meditation on what it means to have two homes yet never fully belong to either. The exhibition features photographic diptychs and layered images that trace Ham's experiences moving between Korea and the United States, combining white acrylic with traditional Korean black ink to create works that hover in the space between two worlds. Trees appear throughout as quiet companions and metaphors for Ham herself, rooted in a landscape while continually changing with the world around them.

Ham, originally trained as a musician with a Bachelor of Music from Ewha Women's University in Seoul, holds a Master of Arts in Photography and New Media from New York University and the International Center of Photography. Her work has been exhibited extensively across the DC area, New York City, and Seoul, and she is a recipient of the Visual Arts Fellowship from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts along with multiple grants from the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities. A winner of the 2019 LensCulture Portrait Awards, her photographs have appeared in publications including LensCulture, Lenscratch, Shadow and Light Magazine, and the UK's Black + White Photography.

Multiple Exposures Gallery, founded in 1985 and located in Studio 312 at the Torpedo Factory Art Center in Alexandria, Virginia, is the longest continuously operating fine art photography gallery in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. The gallery features rotating exhibitions of work by its 15 represented artists, often in collaboration with independent, nationally-recognized jurors and curators. Ham has exhibited frequently at the gallery, with previous shows including Recollections in 2024, which ranged widely in style yet remained cohesive emotionally, often assembling images in doubles or triples to evoke reveries of loss and memory.

What emerges in IN GRAY is not a clear sense of belonging, but an acceptance of uncertainty and ambiguity. The layered photographs resist easy categorization, much like the experience of existing between cultures. Ham's approach, which sometimes involves rephotographing existing pictures or covering them with additional material, creates a visual language that speaks to the fluidity of identity. The exhibition remains open daily from 11 am to 5 pm at the Torpedo Factory, offering viewers a chance to encounter work that finds beauty in the gray spaces between home and elsewhere.
