Aperture Loves New York, on view from September 18 to November 1 at Aperture's new permanent home at 380 Columbus Avenue, marks the opening of a long-awaited space for photography on the Upper West Side. Curated by executive director Sarah Meister, the inaugural installation brings together photographs by more than twenty artists with the Aperture books that advanced their work, tracing seven decades of publishing history through the lens of a city that has shaped—and been shaped by—its photographers.

The exhibition features landmark names including Diane Arbus, Robert Frank, Lee Friedlander, Nan Goldin, and Stephen Shore alongside contemporary voices such as Dawoud Bey, Deana Lawson, Tyler Mitchell, Coreen Simpson, and Carrie Mae Weems. Each photograph appears alongside its corresponding Aperture publication, creating a dialogue between image and book that reflects the foundation's role in championing work that captures the complex spirit of New York City. The installation occupies the gallery space of Aperture's 10,000-square-foot headquarters, which opened after four years of planning and sits directly across from the American Museum of Natural History.

Adjacent to the gallery, the bookstore stocks select Aperture publications while hosting Dashwood Books, New York City's only independent bookstore devoted entirely to photography. For the opening month, Anshika Varma, founder of Offset Projects in New Delhi, launches a rotating program of guest publishers with a curated selection showcasing India's independent publishing landscape. The space operates free to the public Wednesday through Saturday from 11 am to 6 pm and Sunday from 12 pm to 5 pm, with a dynamic calendar of artist talks, including conversations with Gillian Laub, Stephen Shore, and Coreen Simpson.

Aperture, founded in 1952 by a group that included Ansel Adams, Dorothea Lange, and Minor White, has long functioned as a nonprofit publisher and cultural institution without a permanent public home. The new building at Columbus Avenue and West 78th Street consolidates gallery, bookstore, and programming under one roof, offering a place to gather, share ideas, and engage with photography in the heart of Manhattan. Aperture Loves New York sets the tone for this next chapter, honoring the photographers whose work has defined both the city and the medium.
