James Nizam: Fata Morgana at Marshall Gallery presents the first U.S. gallery exhibition by the Vancouver-based artist, whose work treats photography as an expanded, process-driven medium. On view from November 21, 2026, through January 9, 2027, the exhibition takes its title from a specific kind of mirage: the optical effect produced when light passes through a thermal inversion, creating the illusion of objects hovering above the horizon. The show brings together framed photographic prints alongside process-involved objects including ground glass, altered cameras, negatives and sketches.
Nizam, born in 1977 to Lebanese and British parents, approaches image-making through technically inventive methods that challenge conventional photographic representation. His practice often begins with modifications to cameras, lenses and light paths, turning the apparatus itself into a site of experimentation. By working with ground glass, he engages directly with the moment an image is formed, before it reaches film or sensor. The resulting photographs carry traces of that intervention, appearing less as records of a scene than as evidence of a physical and conceptual process.
The Fata Morgana title suggests a visual phenomenon that is both real and illusory. In the exhibition, this idea extends beyond optics to questions of perception, stability and the reliability of the image. Nizam’s work does not hide its making. Instead, it foregrounds the labor, materials and decisions that allow a photograph to exist, inviting viewers to consider how an image is constructed rather than simply what it shows.
Marshall Gallery, long known for its commitment to photography as a fine art medium, provides a context in which Nizam’s interdisciplinary strategies can be read alongside broader histories of photographic experimentation. The inclusion of sketches and altered equipment underscores the artist’s interest in the space between idea and object, plan and result. Together, the works propose photography not as a fixed representation but as a mutable field shaped by light, matter and time.
Fata Morgana does not offer a single narrative. It presents a series of investigations into how images form, how they deceive and how they can be remade through sustained attention to the conditions of their making. In Nizam’s hands, the mirage becomes both subject and method, a way of thinking through the unstable ground on which photography stands.
