Azikiwe Mohammed: Where To, From Here at BAXTER ST at the Camera Club of New York gathers 140 Polaroid photographs drawn from an ongoing series begun in 2023. On view from September 16 through November 11, 2026, the exhibition traces Mohammed’s travels across the United States, documenting people, places and sites of gathering as he asks what kinds of spaces can hold people when established structures collapse, exclude or fail the communities they were meant to support.

The title’s question is both geographic and political. Mohammed considers who those structures have never held and how the shape of “us” continues to expand. Made primarily with Polaroid film, the images retain the scale and immediacy of the original encounters, functioning as record keepers of movement, uncertainty and the ways people build environments for one another. The photographs will be presented as original Polaroids alongside selected enlargements, keeping the work close to the size at which it was made.

Mohammed, a 2005 Bard College graduate and New York-based multidisciplinary artist, treats the camera as a tool to “concretize” experience without leaving the experience as it happens. At BAXTER ST, the installation favors an accessible, home-like vernacular over static museum display. Custom tablecloths and rotating postcard holders invite viewers to handle the images as tactile objects, situating the work among the spaces of gathering, belonging and community continuance where it began.

Centered on the internal pressures experienced by marginalized individuals, the project seeks to map environments where that weight might be lessened. Mohammed’s practice moves through sculpture, sound, photography, performance, video and painted objects, considering how histories, communities and forms of belonging can be held within physical spaces and within the body. His work has received support from Art Matters, the Rema Hort Mann Foundation, Ruth Arts, the Rauschenberg Artists Fund and the Foundation for Contemporary Arts.

Where To, From Here does not offer a single answer. Instead, it asks viewers to consider how we might build, preserve and reimagine spaces of support for one another. By exhibiting these images together for the first time, Mohammed returns his findings to the public spaces where they began, offering a set of Polaroids, tablecloths and brochures as a “more-learning offering” with room for new learnings to emerge.
