Indian Circus by Mary Ellen Mark at the Colorado Photographic Arts Center returns to one of the photographer’s most sustained and intimate projects. On view from September 25 through November 14, 2026, the exhibition follows the traveling circuses Mark encountered across India, not from the audience seats but from inside the daily lives of performers, workers, children and animals.

Mark first traveled to India in 1969 and returned repeatedly over the next two decades. In 1989, with support from the Eastman Kodak Company and the National Endowment for the Arts, she spent six months moving with 18 circus companies. Access was hard-won. Circus owners guarded their routes and routines closely, and the photographs reflect the time needed to be accepted into a world built on constant movement, labor and precarious livelihood.

The work avoids the easy spectacle of the ring. Mark looked instead at rehearsals, dressing areas, shared meals, moments of fatigue and the stillness that surrounds a performance. A handler stands beside an elephant; children wait, work or sleep; performers prepare their bodies for the next act. The circus appears as a tight, interdependent community rather than an exotic stage, held together by family ties, animals, hard work and the repetition of travel.

Mary Ellen Mark, who died in 2015, spent more than five decades photographing people living at the edges of mainstream visibility. Her pictures never conceal the distance between photographer and subject, but they reject detached observation. She built relationships, returned to people over time and treated photography as an encounter shaped by responsibility. In Indian Circus, the camera finds visual drama in patterned costumes, painted faces, animal bodies and improvised interiors, while remaining alert to the realities behind the show.

This first Colorado solo exhibition of Mark’s work offers a close view of a way of life already under pressure when she photographed it. Her images preserve neither a fantasy nor a disappearing spectacle. They record a community in motion, with all the intimacy, labor and uncertainty that movement entails.
