Roy DeCarava: the sound i saw brings together photographs made during the period when the artist developed his most sustained meditation on the relationship between seeing and listening. Curated by Ebony L. Haynes, the exhibition opens at David Zwirner’s Los Angeles gallery on September 19 and focuses on work created from the late 1940s through the 1960s, a period when DeCarava looked closely at both New York street life and the world of jazz.

The photographs move between ordinary city scenes and the charged atmosphere of musical performance. Deliverymen work, children play, commuters wait for trains and solitary corners take on an elegiac weight. Alongside them are portraits of musicians, photographed onstage and off, caught in concentration, fatigue or private reflection. DeCarava does not separate these worlds. The rhythm of the street and the rhythm of jazz belong to the same city, shaped by movement, pause, labor and improvisation.

First assembled as a handmade artist’s book, the sound i saw was later condensed for an exhibition at the Studio Museum in Harlem in 1983. Its deep, carefully modulated silver gelatin prints carry a quiet intensity. Shadows do not simply conceal information; they slow the eye and make room for suggestion. A figure at the edge of a frame, a musician between notes or a passerby caught in motion seems to generate a sound that remains just beyond the image.

DeCarava described his photographs as “images for the head and for the heart,” a phrase that captures the balance between formal precision and emotional openness in the series. The pictures ask viewers to imagine the acoustic life around them: footsteps, train noise, conversation, brass, drums and the pauses that give music its shape.

An adjacent listening room extends that idea through selections inspired by DeCarava’s personal playlists and favorite jazz albums. The Los Angeles presentation marks the fourth solo exhibition of his work in the city, following major presentations at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Los Angeles Center for Photographic Studies and The Underground Museum. Here, photography becomes not a silent medium but a score for urban life.
