Melonie Bennett: Holy Cow! at MMPA turns a family archive into a study of affection, dysfunction and survival. On view from August 7 to October 3, 2026, the exhibition draws from Bennett’s first monograph, a black-and-white sequence of photographs made over two decades, from 1990 to 2011, inside the world she knew best: her own family, friends and rural Maine surroundings.

The pictures are funny, raw and unsentimental all at once. Bennett grew up on a dairy farm, and her photographs carry the rhythms of that life without polishing them into nostalgia. Dogs in cowboy boots, boys playing cards in bras, late-night returns from a moose hunt and college kids streaking through farmland sit beside quieter moments of exhaustion and pause. The result is less a neat album than a record of people holding each other together through drinking, arguing, joking and carrying on.

Bennett’s own words make the project plain: there is no pastoral landscape here, only the ground on which her family makes its life. That distinction matters. The work is rooted in a social world shaped by constant stress, but it never reduces its subjects to hardship. Humor runs through the pictures as a form of release, even a kind of family discipline. Her brother Merritt’s written recollections add another layer, mixing memory, teasing and private history into the visual sequence.

The exhibition follows the publication of Holy Cow!, released by GOST Books in 2026 and already drawing attention for its unsparing look at ordinary family life. Bennett’s photographs have long existed as a visual diary, but the monograph and exhibition give them a sharper frame: not as confession, and not as parody, but as an unusually candid portrait of domestic life under pressure.

At MMPA, the show reads as a reminder that family photographs can carry more than sentiment. In Bennett’s hands, they hold comedy, strain, tenderness and the stubborn will to keep going.
