Tamary Kudita: African Victorian and Birds of Paradise at the Cincinnati Art Museum places identity, costume and colonial inheritance under a sharply focused lens. On view in Gallery 104 from May 3, 2025, to September 6, 2026, the presentation brings together two connected bodies of work by the Zimbabwean photographer, whose portraits mix historical references with contemporary African life.
Kudita, born in 1994 and based in Zimbabwe, works from a personal history marked by cultural mixture. Her family background traces to Shona roots and to a 19th-century union between a Black South African plantation worker and a Dutch soldier, a lineage that echoes in the layered imagery of her photographs. Rather than treating heritage as a fixed category, she uses fashion, gesture and staging to show how identity has been shaped by colonial history, local memory and present-day self-fashioning.
The African Victorian series draws on European art history and Victorian-era visual codes, but it does not merely quote them. Kudita repositions African subjects inside those references, unsettling the assumption that Western portraiture defines the terms of elegance or value. Birds of Paradise shifts toward everyday Zimbabweans, presenting models with a sense of dignity and specificity that resists the flattening gaze of colonial imagery. Together, the two series build a visual argument about representation: who gets pictured, how they are pictured and which histories sit inside the frame.
Kudita’s photographs have traveled widely since her international recognition, including her 2021 title as Open Photographer of the Year at the Sony World Photography Awards. That acclaim has not softened the work’s purpose. The images remain pointed and carefully constructed, balancing beauty with critique. They are formal, but never decorative in a neutral sense.
Presented free of admission and supported by a private collection, the exhibition gives viewers a compact but resonant look at one of contemporary photography’s most lucid voices on African identity, postcolonial memory and the politics of seeing.
