Blessings from the Three: Tortilleras, Jotos, and Potaxies at The Luckman Gallery turns Los Angeles into a charged social landscape, where cyanotype, mirror surfaces and queer Brown memory meet. On view from August 1 to September 12, 2026, the exhibition by Amina Cruz, curated by Steve Galindo and Aaron Gomez, moves through redlined neighborhoods as if they were living archives rather than fixed geography.

Cruz’s photographs draw on the language of spiritual inheritance and urban friction. The title’s three figures — tortilleras, jotos and potaxies — point to different generations of queer self-naming, from reclaimed slurs to contemporary digital kinship. That layering gives the show its force. It treats identity not as a static category, but as something carried, revised and defended across time, often in response to dispossession.

The work is built through cyanotype, a process whose blue tonal register lends the images a quiet intensity, while mirrored supports pull the viewer into the frame. The result is less about looking at landscape than entering it. Streets, open spaces and surfaces seem to hold memory in place, but they also reflect the person standing before them, collapsing distance between subject and witness. Cruz’s use of reflection gives the work a political edge: the act of viewing becomes a form of participation.

The exhibition also resonates with Gloria Anzaldúa’s idea of la facultad, the heightened awareness that emerges from living at the edge of conflict. That notion shapes the emotional logic of Cruz’s pictures, where tenderness and anger sit close together and where dance floors, sidewalks and mirrors become sites of refusal as much as celebration. Brown queer life appears here as an inheritance built under pressure, but also as a source of language, style and survival.

At The Luckman, Blessings from the Three reads as both elegy and declaration: a portrait of a city and a community made visible through acts of care, recall and self-making.
