Give Me One Good Reason for Leaving the House at CPW treats the domestic sphere as a site of pressure rather than shelter. On view in the Community Gallery from August 15 to September 6, 2026, the exhibition brings together twelve artists working through photography to examine how home, memory and public life have been unsettled by the pandemic years, political instability and the constant churn of digital misinformation.

The premise is plain but uneasy: is home still a safe place? The work gathered here answers by looking closely at what enters the house and what remains after it has been changed. Across a range of approaches, the artists unsettle the familiar visual codes of interiors, family life and tradition, replacing them with images that feel fractured, provisional and alert to contradiction. Heirlooms, domestic objects and private spaces carry the weight of larger social failures, but the exhibition resists turning that condition into simple nostalgia.

Curated by Colin Beattie, the show also reflects a practical concern shared by many artist-run spaces: how to build meaningful exhibition contexts when resources are limited. That makes the Community Gallery an apt setting. CPW’s new space is designed to connect local communities through short-run exhibitions and collaborative projects, and this installation uses that framework to place individual practices in dialogue rather than isolation.

The participating artists include Nando Alvarez-Perez, Sara de Brito Faustino, Henry Crawley, Robin Crookall, Danielle Ezzo, Victoria Manning, Dogwood Messer, Harry Murzyn, Alicia Schirrmeister, Marin Sardy, Kate Steciw and Kat Thompson. Their work does not offer a single account of domestic life; instead, it maps a field of uncertainty where commerce, politics, family history and online culture all leave their mark.

An opening reception takes place on August 15 from 3 to 5 p.m., followed by an artist talk at The Post Office in Port Ewen. The exhibition reads as both a collective response and a quiet warning: the house remains familiar, but nothing inside it stands untouched.
