Gordon Parks: Voices in the Mirror at Jack Shainman Gallery returns to images that have long defined American photojournalism, but it does so through a different register: the voices of the people and families who lived inside them. On view from September 18 to November 7, 2026, the exhibition marks the 20th anniversary of The Gordon Parks Foundation and reopens Parks’s photographs as sites of memory, testimony and historical afterlife.

The premise is unusually direct. Families and subjects connected to Parks’s work, including those of Muhammad Ali and Malcolm X, respond to photographs that have circulated for decades in books, magazines and museums. Their reflections shift the images away from fixed interpretation and toward lived experience. What once appeared as singular documentary frames now carries the weight of anecdote, recognition and personal history, giving the exhibition its force.

Parks’s career was built on close observation of Black life under pressure, and the exhibition underscores how carefully he worked against the conventions of distant reportage. His photographs of segregation, civil rights struggle and Black public life rarely rely on spectacle. Instead, they isolate gestures, expressions and ordinary settings with enough precision to make social violence visible without stripping his subjects of dignity. That approach comes through in works tied to the Clark doll tests, Jim Crow Alabama and the Black Panthers, where the emotional register of the picture remains inseparable from the politics around it.

The list of contributors broadens the exhibition’s scope, bringing in figures such as Kathleen Cleaver, Qubilah Shabazz, Ava DuVernay, Bryan Stevenson, Alice Walker, Thelma Golden, Deborah Willis, Hank Willis Thomas and Andrew Young. Their remarks do not simply praise Parks; they extend the archive by adding memory to the photograph’s surface. The result is a rare kind of exhibition, one that treats the subject’s voice as part of the image’s meaning.

By centering reflection alongside photography, Voices in the Mirror restores the human relationships that shaped Parks’s work in the first place.
