Charles Martin Photography at June Kelly Gallery presents a body of work shaped by chance, speed, and close attention to the world as it appeared in front of the camera. On view from June 26 through July 31, 2026, the exhibition marks Martin’s ninth photography show with the gallery and gathers images made in Rio de Janeiro, São Luís do Maranhão, Paris, and Algeria, among other places.
The photographs do not read as a single series so much as a sequence of independent encounters. Each image stands apart, carrying its own rhythm and sense of discovery. Martin’s method is quick and unforced, but the results are far from casual. His pictures register movement, gesture, architecture, and light with a clarity that gives everyday scenes a quiet charge, whether the subject is a street performance, a fragment of travel, or an unexpected view of place.
What gives the exhibition its coherence is Martin’s eye for structure. Even in images made in haste, he finds balance in color, form, and spatial tension. That sensitivity, sharpened over four decades, allows the work to move between documentary observation and visual poise without slipping into mannerism. The photographs suggest a photographer alert to what can be found in passing and disciplined enough to recognize when a moment has resolved itself into an image.
Martin’s background helps explain the range of his practice. Based in New York, he studied at Yale University and later trained in photography there with Thomas Roma and JoAnn Walters. His work has appeared in exhibitions across the United States, Europe, and South America, and it belongs to major museum collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, MoMA, the Whitney, and the Getty. That institutional reach speaks to a practice grounded in travel, observation, and formal restraint.
At June Kelly Gallery, the exhibition highlights a photographer drawn to the world as it unfolds, then attentive enough to turn that passing encounter into a sustained visual record.
