Thirty Years: The Legacy of John Cleary Gallery marks a milestone for one of Houston’s most enduring photography spaces, on view from June 27 to September 5, 2026 at Catherine Couturier Gallery. The exhibition looks back to 1996, when John Cleary opened the gallery on Gallery Row and helped establish what became Houston’s longest-running fine art photography gallery.

Rather than treating the anniversary as a simple celebration, the show returns to the gallery’s beginnings. It draws on the French photography that shaped Cleary’s early collecting and exhibition choices, including Robert Doisneau and André Kertész. That focus reflects both Cleary’s personal taste and the gallery’s longstanding interest in European street photography, a field that remained central to its identity from the start.

The story also carries the marks of memory, which appears uneven but fitting for a gallery history built over three decades. Different recollections survive about the first exhibition: one account describes a Doisneau show, another remembers a broader French street photography presentation, while another recalls a group of famous photographers. What remains certain is the importance of that opening chapter, and of the first works bought and sold there, including Cleary’s own first photograph, Doisneau’s Le Manège de Monsieur Barré.

The exhibition includes that print and the exact André Kertész image sold in the gallery’s first show, tying the present display directly to the gallery’s origin story. Catherine Couturier, who joined as gallery manager in 1999 and later took over after Cleary’s death in 2008, has carried the program forward under a new name since 2012. By then, the gallery had already become part of Houston’s photographic fabric, shaped by collectors, artists and longtime clients who stayed with it through changing eras.

Thirty Years reads as both tribute and institutional record. It places John Cleary’s influence alongside the community that formed around him, and it frames the gallery’s history not as a clean chronology, but as a lived legacy still visible on Gallery Row.
