Widline Cadet: Seremoni Disparisyon (Ritual [Dis]Appearance) arrives at the Contemporary Arts Center as the second presentation of the artist’s first solo museum exhibition in the United States, on view from October 2, 2026 to February 7, 2027. Curated by Kristen Gaylord, the exhibition brings together photographs, installation and video from across a series that has made Cadet one of the most closely watched voices in contemporary photography.
The work begins with family history and the disruptions of migration. Cadet, who left Haiti as a child, first photographed relatives to build a fuller record of ancestors and family members whose images were scarce or missing. Over time, limited access to family abroad pushed the project inward, and the camera turned toward the artist herself and other Black women around her. What emerged is less a conventional archive than a stand-in for one, shaped by absence, memory and the effort to hold onto what distance leaves behind.
The exhibition draws strength from the way Cadet folds autobiography into larger questions about Black diasporic life. Family photographs, home videos, personal objects and Kreyòl titles taken from real conversations give the work a direct connection to lived experience. At the same time, the images resist simple documentary reading. A gingham dress recalls a childhood school uniform; curtains brought from Haiti appear as material traces of home; Los Angeles architecture and bougainvillea echo elements of the island left behind. The result is a world built through repetition, substitution and return.
Cadet’s approach also expands the language of photography. Vinyl applications, photo-sculpture hybrids and multimedia presentations push the work beyond the flat image, giving it a tactile, spatial presence. Seremoni Disparisyon treats disappearance not as an end point, but as a condition that shapes identity, family and belonging. In doing so, it offers a portrait of migration that is both intimate and sharply observed.
