In the Interest of Time brings seven regional artists together at the Contemporary Arts Center in a group exhibition that treats time not as a backdrop, but as the subject itself. Opening October 2, 2026 and on view through February 7, 2027, the show was selected through a FotoFocus juried open call curated by Theresa Bembnister.

The exhibition gathers artists whose work stretches across years, generations and shifting forms of memory. Joseph Vitone has photographed relatives near Akron since 1998, building an extended record of birthdays, divorces, illness and family change. Lynn Whitney has spent more than a decade photographing the shoreline between Cleveland and Toledo, turning a familiar stretch of Lake Erie into a study of environmental pressure and human dependence.

Several artists approach time through absence, loss and revision. In 1655 Ireland Rd., Jordanne Renner mailed prints of her family home to her father and stepmother, who marked them up with notes, drawings and Post-its. Twenty-three years later, she returned to the project with her brother and father after her stepmother’s death, reopening the work as a meditation on memory and family history. Julie Renée Jones, in Hold Still, uses the visual language of horror to describe the psychological shift of new motherhood, a period marked by disorientation as much as change.

Other works look further outward. Robyn Moore’s Being in the Land evokes deep time through spectral figures and landscapes shaped by geological duration. Osamu James Nakagawa’s Witness Trees and Indelible Structures document former Japanese American incarceration sites, preserving visible traces of places that remain central to the country’s wartime history. Elijah Howe turns to Chained Rock, Kentucky, combining archival materials, handmade objects and contemporary photographs in a way that blurs fact and interpretation.

Taken together, the works in In the Interest of Time show photography as a medium of delay, repetition and return. The exhibition treats time as something lived, inherited and contested, with each artist finding a different way to make that pressure visible.
