Ken Graves: Lost in the Funhouse opens June 22 and runs through August 22, 2026 at the Gallery at Leica Store San Francisco, bringing back the work of a photographer who turned everyday American life into something uneasy, comic, and sharply observed.
The exhibition gathers images marked by disorientation, irony and psychological tension. Graves did not treat confusion as a problem to be avoided. He used it as material. His photographs move through scenes of spectacle, performance and emotional strain, where the ordinary slips into the absurd and where humor often sits next to discomfort. The result is work that feels both rooted in a specific American setting and alert to the instability beneath it.
Born in Portland in 1942, Graves studied at the San Francisco Art Institute and went on to build a long career as a photographer, teacher and book artist. He co-authored American Snapshots in 1977 and later worked with Eva Lipman on Ballroom, Restraint and Desire and Derby. His photographs have appeared in major museum collections, including MoMA, the Brooklyn Museum and SFMOMA, and his career includes decades of teaching at Penn State University.
What stands out in Lost in the Funhouse is Graves’ ability to hold chaos in place. His pictures do not simplify the contradictions of modern life. They frame them carefully, letting tension, costume, gesture and chance carry the image. That approach gives the work its force. Even when the scenes feel playful, they also register as exact records of a culture full of strain, performance and self-invention.
Curated by Eva Lipman and the team at the Gallery at Leica Store San Francisco, the exhibition also carries a personal weight. Lipman, Graves’ wife and photographic partner, continues to steward their shared body of work. Seen in that context, the show reads as both a tribute and a reminder of how distinctive Graves’ vision remains: darkly funny, observant, and never quite settled into one mood alone.
