Since 2008, Sasha Arutyunova has used photography as a lens to navigate the shifting landscapes of family, distance, and identity. Following her parents’ divorce in the early 1990s, she and her mother immigrated from Moscow to the United States, leaving behind a world of familiar routines and cultural touchstones. Her childhood unfolded across continents and cultures, from the cozy interiors of post-Soviet apartments to the sunlit, tropical streets of Florida. This intersection of geography, language, and memory shaped the core of her visual exploration, giving rise to a photographic practice that seeks to make sense of separation, togetherness, and the subtle transformations of self.
Arutyunova’s long-term project, Wind and Other Dangers (2008–), examines the resilience of familial ties stretched across Russia, Armenia, and the United States. Using the camera to document her parents, grandparents, and herself, she constructs intimate portraits and quiet moments that reveal both distance and connection. Each image becomes a bridge across cultural, linguistic, and generational divides, capturing the ways economic circumstances, geopolitical realities, and personal growth influence relationships. Her work is at once a meditation on displacement and a celebration of enduring bonds, offering viewers insight into the nuanced interplay of memory, identity, and migration.
Arutyunova’s photographic style is characterized by a cinematic atmosphere and a sensitivity to detail. She elevates the mundane, finding meaning in the gestures, spaces, and interactions that define everyday life. Beyond still photography, her practice extends to moving-image projects and studies of bodies in motion, exploring themes of dance, labor, and physical presence in context. Her first monograph, Shelter, documented New York City during the 2020 pandemic lockdown, reflecting her ongoing interest in place, community, and human resilience.
Her work has been shown internationally at institutions including the Houston Center for Photography, Museo Casa Giorgione, and OMNEFEST Biennial, and has received recognition from PDN, the Magenta Foundation, and Aperture. Through her sensitive and deeply personal lens, Arutyunova continues to chart the complexities of immigrant experience, the passage of time, and the enduring power of family across distance and generations.
