BLACK AND WHITE - MONOCHROME:
KODAK, ILFORD, FUJI were the names that stood out in the early years of photography when shooting, developing and then printing were the steps to creating a great Black and White image. Memories of darkrooms, trays, chemicals, and the essential tools of the process bring smiles to many.
The world of photography has changed dramatically in terms of how these images are created, but the special nature of a monochrome print — whether black and white, sepia, or even shades of a single color — remains a powerful way to express emotion, texture, and beauty through gradations from light to dark. Whether your original image was captured on Tri-X film, with a digital SLR, or with your phone, if the final result is a compelling monochrome image, it fits this call.
Please note:
Images selected for an NYC4PA prize within the past 2 years are not eligible and, if selected, will be disqualified. Images submitted and not selected may be resubmitted at any time.
We use a blind jury process — no signatures or watermarks on your images and no artist names in your image titles.

This is a focus on people as they appear in everyday life, and on the single person within them, without staging or certainty. People are alone or together, close or distant, each one a small world within a larger unfolding of moments that continue beyond the frame. The human presence becomes both individual and collective, central and passing. Photography gathers these moments as traces rather than conclusions. What remains is not explanation but recognition, the sense of having seen a perso
