Darren Almond: Fullmoon is an expanded edition of the artist’s long-exposure night photographs. The book includes more than 370 images made from the turn of the century to the present, with locations ranging from Yosemite and Patagonia to the Japanese seashore, Bermuda, the Alps, and English meadows. Almond uses exposures of over fifteen minutes to record landscapes under the light of a full moon. The resulting images show rivers, mountains, and coastlines with a clarity that resembles daylight, but with a different tonal quality and atmosphere.
The photographs are made using a “night-for-day” technique. Long exposures allow star trails to appear in the sky and give water a misty, frothy texture. Shadows retain a soft glow, and the overall effect is less dramatic than conventional night photography. Almond has said that with such long exposures he cannot see exactly what he is shooting while the shutter is open, but the extended time allows the landscape to “express itself” within the frame.
The series covers a wide range of environments, including American mountain ranges, Arctic ice fields, coastal rocks in Japan, and sites in Britain. The British images are often more intimate, reflecting the artist’s proximity to these locations. The book includes an introduction by Sheena Wagstaff, head of the Modern and Contemporary Art Department at the Metropolitan Museum in New York, and an essay by writer and critic Brian Dillon. These texts place the work in relation to ideas of nature, memory, and time.
Darren Almond was born in 1971 in Wigan, England. He works in photography, film, and sculpture, with exhibitions at institutions such as the ICA and Tate Britain in London, Kunsthalle Zürich, K21 Düsseldorf, Museum Folkwang Essen, SITE Santa Fe, and Art Tower Mito in Japan. This updated volume brings together the complete Fullmoon series and is also available as a limited Art Edition of 60 numbered copies, each signed by the artist and accompanied by an original print.
