Harry Gruyaert: A Sense of Place brings together photographs of cities made over more than fifty years. The book includes images from New York, Paris, Tokyo, Moscow, Antwerp, Mumbai, and Zanzibar, as well as work from Belgium and France. Rather than following a conventional travel route, the selection is organised around Gruyaert’s visual approach. His photographs emphasise colour, light, and urban geometry, using these elements to structure the frame as much as the buildings and streets themselves.
The images focus on everyday scenes in cafés, on street corners, and against walls and facades. People appear in routine situations: waiting, walking, leaning, or talking. Gruyaert does not prioritise famous landmarks or dramatic events. Instead, he records ordinary moments and social rituals, allowing architecture, clothing, and light to interact within the composition. The result is a record of urban life in which individual figures negotiate their place within a larger collective environment.
Gruyaert’s use of colour is a central feature of the work. Strong hues and sharp contrasts reconfigure familiar settings, giving ordinary scenes a heightened visual presence. Shadows cut across surfaces, and architectural lines create rhythmic patterns that echo musical phrasing. This approach transforms mundane locations into staged environments without removing them from their real-world context.
The book includes an essay by Géraldine Lay, who describes the project as an inquiry into modern life. She notes that Gruyaert’s attention to anonymous city dwellers has received less attention than his formal qualities. A Sense of Place addresses this by highlighting how his passage through different cities produces a consistent visual language. The volume presents his work as a long-term study of how people inhabit urban spaces and how colour and composition can reveal the energy that extends beyond any single frame.
