Robert Adams: Contact presents around fifty of Adams’s photographs alongside their original contact sheets, many of them previously unpublished. The material covers roughly twenty years, from the 1960s to the mid-1980s, a period during which Adams worked mainly with medium-format and large-format negatives before switching to 35 mm. The contact sheets show every exposure from a single roll of film or a set of 4x5 negatives, often marked with red marker or pencil to indicate selected frames, cropping, and printing instructions.

Adams is best known for his images of the American West, which document suburban expansion, logging, mining, and other forms of development alongside remaining natural landscapes. The contact sheets reveal how these compositions were reached through repeated attempts and adjustments. Variations in framing, exposure, and timing appear across consecutive frames, along with notes on exposure times and other technical details. The pages function as a working record of his process rather than as a presentation of finished images.

The book includes an introduction by Jeffrey Fraenkel, who notes that Adams was not searching for a single “perfect” picture but continued working until an image met his standards. The contact sheets show which frames were rejected and which were developed into prints, providing a clearer view of his editorial decisions. They also document the physical handling of the negatives, with cropping lines and printing guides drawn directly on the sheets.

Robert Adams, born in 1937, began photographing in the mid-1960s and has published more than 40 books, including The New West, Los Angeles Spring, Listening to the River, Turning Back, Tenancy, and Thalia. He lives and works in the Pacific Northwest. Contact offers a detailed look at his working method and adds new material to the understanding of his long-term project on the changing landscape of the American West.
