Helen Levitt: New York Archive / Black & White brings together previously unpublished photographs from Helen Levitt’s archive alongside a selection of her best-known images. Published with Zander Galerie, Cologne, the volume focuses on her black-and-white street work, which helped define a distinct approach to photographing everyday life in New York. Walker Evans once described Levitt’s method as “anti-journalistic,” referring to her preference for small, unstructured moments over conventional news subjects.
Levitt began photographing in New York during the 1930s, working mainly in Spanish Harlem and on the Lower East Side. Her images record children playing, street games, chalk drawings on sidewalks, and brief encounters between residents and passers-by. The photographs avoid overt commentary or staged scenes. Instead, they rely on timing, composition, and an eye for gesture and expression to capture the rhythm of the street. Her work shows a consistent interest in ordinary activities and in the ways people occupy public space.
The book includes an essay by photographer Tod Papageorge, who examines Levitt’s technique and her influence on later street photography. He describes her ability to identify moments when visual form and meaning align quickly and without obvious preparation. Papageorge also notes her belief that a camera pointed at the disorder of the street could produce images with the clarity and structure often associated with poetry. His text places Levitt’s work in relation to other photographers of her generation and to later developments in American photography.
New York Archive / Black & White is published alongside New York Archive / Color, which presents Levitt’s work in Kodachrome. Together, the two volumes offer a more complete view of her career. The black-and-white book confirms the importance of her early street photographs and shows how her approach to composition, timing, and subject matter continued to shape her practice over several decades. The inclusion of unpublished material provides new information about the range and depth of her archive.
