Helen Levitt: New York Archive / Color brings together more than 100 color photographs by Helen Levitt, whose reputation has long rested on her black-and-white street work. Published with Zander Galerie, Cologne, the book presents a large-format selection that includes well-known images and previously unpublished material. The aim is to reassess Levitt’s contribution to color photography and to place her work more clearly within the development of New Color Photography in the 1970s.

Levitt began photographing in black and white during the 1930s and 1940s. In 1959 she started working in color, using Kodachrome film to record everyday life in New York. Her subjects include residents of Spanish Harlem, the Lower East Side, and the Midtown red-light districts. The images show shoppers, shopkeepers, delivery workers, street vendors, parents, and children moving through crowded streets and small businesses. Levitt’s approach remains consistent with her earlier work: she photographs ordinary moments without staging or direct intervention.

Her use of color is deliberate and precise. She employs hue and tone to highlight unexpected details, to organise space within the frame, and to guide the viewer’s eye across different parts of the scene. Rather than focusing on a single focal point, many of the photographs encourage the eye to move between figures, objects, and areas of light. This method gives the images a sense of activity and complexity that matches the environments she documents.

Levitt showed her color work in a slideshow at the Museum of Modern Art in 1974, but the exhibition received little attention at the time. Her color photographs were not published in book form until 2005. New York Archive / Color, released alongside New York Archive / Black & White, offers a more complete view of her practice. The volume demonstrates that Levitt’s color work was not a minor side project but a significant part of her career, with a clear influence on later developments in American color photography.
