Pablo Arroyo: Plates, published by Skira, marks a new stage in the career of a photographer long associated with international fashion imagery. After working on campaigns and catalogues for brands including Gucci, Alexander McQueen, Trussardi, and Valentino, Arroyo turns away from the demands of commercial image-making and focuses on photographs with a more reduced approach. The book is the first monograph dedicated to this part of his work.

The images concentrate on objects and nudes, presented against plain backgrounds and separated from surrounding detail. Without elaborate styling or complex settings, each subject becomes the main point of attention. Arroyo uses controlled compositions, direct lighting, and a limited visual vocabulary to examine shape, surface, volume, and posture. The photographs are not fashion images in the usual sense: they do not present garments, brands, or constructed lifestyles. Instead, they focus on the physical presence and formal qualities of what appears in front of the camera.

This change in direction also connects with Arroyo’s earlier training. Born in Mexico City in 1975, he studied art history, screen printing, and engraving before moving to Italy in the early 1990s. At the Istituto Europeo di Design in Milan, he continued his studies in graphic design, photography, and art history. He began his professional career as a graphic designer at Vogue Italia and became a full-time photographer in 1998.

Arroyo later worked as a creative director and editor in chief at L’Officiel Hommes Italia and L’Officiel Hommes Paris, while developing magazines, campaigns, and visual identities. Plates presents a different pace and purpose. Its isolated subjects and straightforward compositions place the emphasis on looking rather than narrative. The book documents Arroyo’s return to a more essential form of photography, shaped by experience in fashion but no longer limited by its conventions.
