Few cities are as architecturally diverse, layered, and constantly evolving as Los Angeles. For decades, An Architectural Guidebook to Los Angeles has offered readers a way to explore that complexity, documenting the buildings, neighborhoods, and landmarks that have shaped the visual identity of Los Angeles County.

First published in 1965 by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the guide has become an enduring reference for anyone interested in the region’s architecture. Now in its sixth edition, the book has undergone an extensive revision, expanding its coverage to 96 sections organized across 13 geographic chapters. More than 200 new entries have been added, bringing together thousands of sites and reflecting the remarkable range of architectural styles and periods found throughout the county.

The original guide was written by architectural historians Robert Winter and David Gebhard. This new edition has been revised and edited by Robert Inman, an award-winning urban walker and longtime collaborator of Winter. Historian Nathan Masters, host of the Emmy Award–winning series Lost LA, contributes the foreword, placing the guide within the broader story of the city and its ever-changing landscape.

The sixth edition also carries a record of recent loss. Following the devastating Eaton and Palisades fires of 2025, several structures documented in the guide no longer exist. Rather than rewriting history, the new edition preserves their original entries while acknowledging their loss, giving the book an additional role as a record of a city in transition.

More than a practical architectural reference, An Architectural Guidebook to Los Angeles invites readers to look more closely at the places around them. Whether used for planning an urban walk, discovering overlooked buildings, or simply understanding the city’s visual history, this richly expanded edition belongs on the bookshelf of anyone curious about Los Angeles and the architecture that defines it.
