Josef Koudelka: Invasion Prague 68 brings together one of the most important photographic records of the Soviet-led invasion of Czechoslovakia. In August 1968, Warsaw Pact forces entered Prague to end the reform movement known as the Prague Spring. Koudelka, then known primarily for his theatre photography and with limited experience in conventional photojournalism, photographed the events as they unfolded around him.

His images show crowds confronting soldiers, civilians surrounding armored vehicles, and residents reacting to the sudden presence of military force in familiar streets. Faces register fear, anger, confusion, and determination, while handwritten signs and spontaneous gestures record the public response to the occupation. Koudelka concentrates on the people directly affected by the invasion rather than on official leaders or formal ceremonies. The photographs show how a political crisis entered daily life and changed the appearance and behavior of the city.

The history of the photographs is closely linked to the danger under which they were made. Koudelka initially photographed for himself and had no clear idea of how the images would circulate. The negatives were secretly taken out of Czechoslovakia, and the photographs were distributed internationally through Magnum Photos under the credit “P.P.,” meaning Prague Photographer. The use of an anonymous attribution protected Koudelka and others connected with the work. The photographer’s identity remained concealed for several years, while the images received international recognition.

This hardcover edition contains 250 photographs selected from Koudelka’s archive. Contemporary radio broadcasts and eyewitness accounts accompany the images, providing additional information about the invasion and its immediate consequences. Invasion Prague 68 documents a decisive event in modern European history while also showing the risks faced by civilians who resisted military occupation. Nearly six decades later, the photographs remain an important record of repression, public courage, and the role of photography in preserving collective memory.
