Alex Webb: Walking Blues brings together more than a decade of photographs made across the United States. The series covers approximately forty cities between 2010 and 2025, including busy urban centers and quieter residential areas. Webb focuses on ordinary street life rather than landmarks, photographing pedestrians, buildings, storefronts, public spaces, and brief encounters. His images show cities as places where separate activities and communities occupy the same space, often for only a moment.
Webb works with an instinctive approach, responding to situations as they develop rather than arranging conventional views of each location. A person crossing a patch of sunlight, a group gathered outside a shop, or strangers positioned within the same frame can create the structure of a photograph. Several events often occur at once, requiring the viewer to move across the image and identify connections between figures, colors, and architectural details.
The title Walking Blues refers to the importance of blues music in Webb’s method. The photographs rely on repetition, improvisation, contrast, and changes in tempo. Strong reds, yellows, blues, and greens organize the compositions and give visual emphasis to otherwise familiar scenes. Webb’s use of color does not simply identify a place; it separates elements within the frame and helps establish relationships between people, objects, and areas of light or shadow.
Across the series, Webb examines how American cities are shaped by movement and difference. Migration, cultural exchange, personal expression, and adaptation appear through daily activities rather than through formal portraits or direct statements. The photographs do not present one definition of contemporary America. Instead, they document a country made up of overlapping communities and experiences, visible in the way people share streets, neighborhoods, and public spaces. Walking Blues records that process through moments found during the photographer’s travels.
