Tim Page: Nam Contact draws on black-and-white archives from the Vietnam War for the first time, revealing unseen images and ephemera from the British photographer who is best known for his color work on the conflict. Edited with Stephen Dupont, the book presents Page’s contact sheets and individual frames from those sheets, alongside diary entries, notes, letters from noted journalists of the era, and other materials from what was called the “first media war”—the first and last war without media censorship.

Page, born in 1944, covered diverse actions with the South Vietnamese, Americans, Koreans, and Australians. Nam Contact follows the period from 1965, before U.S. marines had arrived, to 1969, when American troops numbered over 500,000. That same year marked the end of Page’s involvement in the war after he was injured by a landmine. His images have since become iconic, and his lifestyle with a band of journalists and soldiers was depicted in the television documentary Frankie’s House (1992) and in numerous films about the conflict.

The book returns to an era when a roll of film with 36 frames had to tell the story of a particular action. The contact sheets show how Page worked under pressure, moving through scenes and capturing moments that would define the visual record of the war. The diaries and notes add a personal layer, documenting what he experienced and thought during intense periods of combat. Letters from prominent journalists provide additional context and lend authority to the chronicle.
