Keizo Kitajima: Tokyo―Koza brings together two seminal bodies of work that define the uncompromising vision of Japanese photographer Keizo Kitajima. Created in the late 1970s, Photographs of Okinawa and Tokyo 1979 emerge from distinct geographies yet share a common intensity. Kitajima approaches both places not as a distant observer but as an active participant, embedding himself within the charged atmospheres of nightlife, street culture, and marginal spaces. The resulting images carry a visceral immediacy, shaped by proximity and instinct rather than detachment.
In Okinawa, shortly after its reversion to Japanese control, Kitajima navigates a landscape marked by cultural tension and layered identities. Bars, clubs, and dimly lit streets become stages where encounters unfold with raw unpredictability. In Tokyo, he turns toward the restless energy of the capital’s underground, capturing fleeting moments that speak to desire, alienation, and the search for belonging. Across both series, the night operates as more than a setting. It becomes a metaphorical terrain where social boundaries loosen and hidden aspects of identity surface.
Shot in stark black and white, the photographs rely on direct flash that flattens space and heightens contrast. Faces appear suddenly illuminated against darkness, gestures freeze mid-motion, and environments take on a harsh, almost confrontational clarity. This aesthetic, now closely associated with Kitajima’s practice, reflects an urgency that resists refinement. The images feel immediate and unfiltered, preserving the tension of each encounter without smoothing its edges.
Although initially published as separate works, Kitajima later recognizes the deep continuity between these series. Tokyo―Koza unites them in a single volume, allowing their parallels to resonate across time and place. Presented in an expansive format, the photographs retain their original force, offering a portrait of a society in flux while revealing the foundations of a photographic language grounded in immersion, confrontation, and lived experience.
