The enigmatic French filmmaker Chris Marker was never bound by a single medium. His works—ranging from La Jetée to Sans Soleil—blur the lines between cinema, literature, political essay, and art installation. In Immemory, originally published in 1998 in French and 2002 in English as an interactive CD-ROM, Marker crafted a labyrinthine, mixed-media memoir, inviting readers to explore “zones” of travel, war, poetry, and cinema. Navigating through images and text, users wandered through the corridors of Marker's memory as if embarking on an archaeological expedition of thought and recollection.
A groundbreaking experiment in digital storytelling, Immemory was both an invention and an epitaph for its own format—soon rendered obsolete by technological shifts. Now, after years of meticulous effort, the work has been reborn in book form as Immemory: Gutenberg Version. This long-awaited transformation, initiated by Marker himself before his passing in 2012, reinterprets his vision in a timeless format, ensuring its endurance beyond the ephemeral digital age.
Chris Marker (1921–2012) was a filmmaker, writer, and photographer, as well as a veteran of the French Resistance and the U.S. Air Force. His films earned him international acclaim, while his influence extended far beyond cinema, shaping the discourse on memory, time, and political consciousness. With Immemory: Gutenberg Version, one of his most ambitious projects is finally brought into the future—through the enduring medium of the past.
