Robert Frank’s and Todd Webb’s parallel 1955 projects to photograph America are considered in the context of mid-twentieth-century American culture.

In 1955 two photographers were awarded grants from the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation to embark on trips across the United States. Robert Frank (1924–2019) drove coast to coast, photographing the highways, bars, and people that formed the basis for his widely admired publication The Americans (1958). Todd Webb (1905–2000) walked across the country, searching for “vanishing Americana and what is taking its place.”

Unaware of each other’s work, the photographers produced strikingly similar images of the highway, parades, and dim, smoky barrooms. Yet while Frank’s grainy, off-kilter style revealed many inequities of American life, Webb’s carefully composed images embraced clear detail and celebrated the individual oddities of Americans and their locales.

This revelatory book is the first to publish Webb’s 1955 photographs and connects these parallel projects for the first time. More than one hundred images accompany text illuminating Frank’s and Webb’s different perspectives and approaches to similar subjects and places; the difference in reception of Frank’s iconic work and Webb’s relatively unknown series; and the place of the road trip in shaping American identity at midcentury.

Published in association with the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.

Walker Evans

Sep 2026 — Thames & Hudson

Photographer Monographs and Art Books: Walker Evans

Walker Evans presents a major reassessment of one of the most enduring figures in modern photography, showing him as both a photographer of his time and someone who worked ahead of it. Evans (1903–1975) produced images that remain inseparable from the history of photography and the history of the United States. His subjects are quintessentially American—small-town life, typical buildings, commercial signs, anonymous citizens—but he approached them with the curiosity of an outsider, using an exac

Over the course of ten years, Unspoken became far more than a photographic series for Jo Ann Chaus—it evolved into a deeply personal exploration of identity, memory, and transformation. What began as intimate conversations between the artist and her camera gradually unfolded into a visual narrative examining the roles women inherit, perform, and ultimately challenge. Through self-portraiture, Chaus inhabits a cast of familiar female archetypes, exposing the invisible expectations that continue t

Pamela Thomas-Graham: Stone by Morning is a quiet invocation of Iceland’s elemental power, where geology and myth seem inseparable. In this luminous volume, Pamela Thomas-Graham turns her lens toward a land shaped by fire and ice, tracing how its stark terrain has nourished centuries of storytelling. The period of reduced public activity allowed him to review this material with distance. The resulting images form a layered panorama of a society in transition, focused on the individual within social structures, collective dynamics, and media influ

The book brings together photographs made between 1963 and 1973 during Mark’s travels, with a strong focus on Turkey, where she spent a year on a Fulbright scholarship, as well as work from India and Nepal. Ben Marcin: The Holdouts

Aug 2026 — GOST Books

Photographer Monographs and Art Books: Ben Marcin: The Holdouts

Ben Marcin: The Holdouts centers on places that persist at the edges of visibility—houses and encampments that remain, resist, or quietly fade in and around Baltimore and Maryland’s Eastern Shore. The debut photobook gathers three distinct bodies of work: solitary row houses that somehow escaped demolition in the inner city; abandoned farmhouses where the last generations have died or moved away; and temporary homeless camps that rarely last more than a year before being cleared or dispersed.

Martin Schoeller: Drag Queens

Aug 2026 — Steidl

Photographer Monographs and Art Books: Martin Schoeller: Drag Queens

.i>Martin Schoeller: Drag Queens presents close-up portraits of the most famous drag performers in America, from Brooke Lynn Hytes to Aquaria, using Schoeller’s signature tight framing to strip away spectacle and reveal the inner life of each subject. Over the last two decades, drag has moved from niche corners into the center of popular culture, aided by its photogenic appeal, but good portraits of drag queens must go beyond glitz and glamor to show the essence, diversity, and power of the arti

Tim Page: Nam Contact

Aug 2026 — Steidl

Photographer Monographs and Art Books: Tim Page: Nam Contact

Tim Page: Nam Contact draws on black-and-white archives from the Vietnam War for the first time, revealing unseen images and ephemera from the British photographer who is best known for his color work on the conflict. Edited with Stephen Dupont, the book presents Page’s contact sheets and individual frames from those sheets, alongside diary entries, notes, letters from noted journalists of the era, and other materials from what was called the “first media war”—the first and last war without medi

Photographer Monographs and Art Books: Peter Beard: The End of the Game (New Edition)

Peter Beard: The End of the Game remains one of the most influential and unsettling photographic testimonies on the ecological transformation of Africa during the twentieth century. First assembled over several decades, the book combines Peter Beard’s photographs, journals, collages, and reflections into a deeply personal chronicle of environmental collapse in East Africa. Working primarily in Kenya and Uganda during the 1960s and 1970s, Beard documents the devastating consequences of human inte

Jana Schulz: Tetris B Mountaingoat

Aug 2026 — Publisher DISTANZ Verlag GmbH

Photographer Monographs and Art Books: Jana Schulz: Tetris B Mountaingoat

Jana Schulz: Tetris B Mountaingoat unfolds as a nuanced exploration of masculinity, vulnerability, and identity through a series of intimate photographic encounters. Based in Berlin, Jana Schulz approaches photography as a collaborative and evolving exchange rather than a detached act of observation. Her images emerge from meetings with men previously unknown to her, where trust and performance gradually develop during the process of photographing. The resulting work occupies a space between doc

Andrea Modica: Italian Story

Jul 2026 — L'Artière

Photographer Monographs and Art Books: Andrea Modica: Italian Story

Andrea Modica: Italian Story brings together a forty-year photographic journey through Italy, unfolding as a personal meditation on time, place, and the act of seeing. The work is made entirely with an 8×10 view camera, a choice that shapes the entire approach: the images are deliberate, slow, and grounded in presence, requiring the photographer to return to the same places over decades. This method produces photographs that carry the weight of duration and the sense of a relationship that deepe

Nigel Grierson: Theatre of Space Vol 1

Jul 2026 — Lost Press

Photographer Monographs and Art Books: Nigel Grierson: Theatre of Space Vol 1

Nigel Grierson: Theatre of Space Vol 1 collects street photographs taken in London during the early 1980s while Grierson studied at the Royal College of Art. The book pairs these images with an essay by Gerry Badger, a long-time writer on photography, and presents Grierson’s contribution to documentary practice at a moment when British street photography favored natural light and restraint. Grierson’s work stands out for its use of flash in daylight, a technique that read as unconventional at th

Photographer Monographs and Art Books: Beate Gütschow: Resistance, Flood, Fire, Resistance

Beate Gütschow: Resistance, Flood, Fire, Resistance. examines the visual aftermath of environmental and social upheaval through a body of photographs shaped by patience, distance, and sustained observation. Rather than documenting catastrophe in the immediate moment of crisis, German artist Beate Gütschow arrives weeks later, when media attention fades and landscapes begin to absorb the traces of destruction. Her photographs depict villages scarred by forest fires, regions transformed by floodin
