In 1943, Roy Stryker, the head of the Department of Defense's Office of War Information sent Esther Bubley on a series of bus trips throughout the Midwest and South. Her assignment? To document the role that the nation's bus lines played not only in mobilizing troops and war workers, but also in providing transportation between cities for individuals who could not do so under wartime rationing.
Bubley would go on to contribute 40 photo essays to Life, and in her first major assignment, her skill at capturing the wide range of human experience is already on display.
This book features over 140 photographs by Bubley arranged into three chapters.
