Book Review: The Hook by Lisa Cutler

By Sandrine Hermand-Grisel

What I love most about The Hook is that it began with a wrong turn. In 2017, Lisa Cutler took a wrong turn after getting off at the Smith Street station in Brooklyn and found herself in Red Hook. Instead of turning around, she decided to stay lost. What could have been an insignificant detour becam

Announcing the Winners of AAP Magazine 60: Nature Photography Awards

By Sandrine Hermand-Grisel

Contests

There is something wonderfully humbling about photographing nature. We can spend hours waiting for the right light, following a change in the landscape, watching an animal, or simply noticing something small that we might otherwise have walked past. And sometimes, almost by chance, we are given a moment we could never have planned. This is what I love about nature photography: it asks us to pay attention. For AAP Magazine #60: Nature, we received photographs that approach the natural world i

Seeking Answers on the Wind: A Journey to Gannan by Wen Leng

By Wen Leng

Photographers

Driven by a deep fascination with Tibetan culture, I embarked on a solo adventure to Xiahe County in the Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture. Navigating the remote, difficult terrain alone was more than just a journey across rugged landscapes—it was a personal quest to find answers within myself. Arriving during a traditional Tibetan horse racing festival, I was quickly drawn beyond the excitement of the arena and into the beating heart of local life. What touched me most deeply was the loca

Eve Arnold: All about Eve

From Hollywood stars and political figures to children, workers, fashion models and people living in some of the most remote places in the world, Eve Arnold spent more than five decades looking closely at people. Her photographs are often intimate, sometimes quiet and occasionally unexpected, but they are rarely distant. For Arnold, photography was not simply about recording what was happening in front of her. It was a way of getting closer to people and trying to understand them. From 19 Sep

Book Review: Find Me Paradise by Benita Suchodrev

By Sandrine Hermand-Grisel

Publications

“Paradise — if it exists — appears only in fragments, in shards, in disturbances, in moments that flicker and disappear before we can hold them.” Benita Suchodrev’s line is perhaps the closest thing Find Me Paradise has to an instruction. I found myself doing exactly that: moving through the book in fragments, returning to it, stopping, starting again. There are photography books that tell you where you are, when the photographs were made, and what you are supposed to understand from them.

Shapes in Photography: AAP Magazine 59 Winners Explore Form & Composition

By Sandrine Hermand-Grisel

AAP Magazine #59: Shapes celebrates the magazine's 59th issue with a global exploration of photography built around one deceptively simple idea: shape. Not as a formal exercise, but as a way of seeing. Book Review: Marching West: The Los Angeles Civil Rights Movement in Photographs

By Sandrine Hermand-Grisel

Marching West: The Los Angeles Civil Rights Movement in Photographs invites readers to reconsider the familiar map of American civil rights history. When we think about the movement, we often picture Selma, Birmingham, Montgomery, and the iconic photographs associated with those places. Los Angeles rarely occupies the same space in our visual memory. Yet this richly researched volume makes clear that the struggle for equality was also taking place on the West Coast, through demonstrations,

Book Review: Burnt Eyes by Gilles Nicolet

By Sandrine Hermand-Grisel

Some photobooks reveal their ambition slowly. Burnt Eyes by Gilles Nicolet captures your attention from the very first image, but its true strength lies in how consistently that sense of wonder continues throughout the book. It asks for time, attention, and a slower way of looking. The photographs move like memory itself — soft at the edges, returning to certain moments while letting others fade. For more than three decades, Nicolet has returned to Africa with his camera, and that long relati

Book Review: Resounding with Echoes by Richard Hay Jr.

'Resounding with Echoes: Sojourns Across Africa and America' by Richard Hay Jr. arrived on my desk at a moment when photography often feels trapped between spectacle and speed.
