Biography

In April 1986, I boarded a train in the border town of Nogales, Mexico, for a 16-hour journey to visit a Mexican woman I had fallen in love with. Watching the sun rise through a misty landscape, hearing the staccato rhythm of Spanish, and smelling the tamales my fellow passengers brought aboard was sensory overload for a boy raised in Montana, USA.

Mexico also reinvigorated my photography. I married that woman, Mireya, and have now spent more than half my life living in the heart of Mexico while working as an educator and travel photographer.

Artist Statement

My recent work has brought me full circle, returning me to where photography began for me: black-and-white images and the anticipation of seeing them come to life in print. Although I have embraced the digital medium and value the control it gives me over every step of the process, my approach remains rooted in observation rather than interpretation. Ultimately, I want my photographs to convey a sense of place, primarily of Mexico—a country that continues to hold my attention through its landscapes, its people, and the ways in which the two are inseparably connected.
