Giants Among the Golden Dust from the series Among Horns, Dust, and Smoke: Scenes and Chronicles of Mundari. © Michel Pedrero
At dusk, the Mundari camp is bathed in a golden light that sets the sky ablaze and transforms the landscape.
The dust in the air catches the sun's rays, uniting people and cattle in a scene of strength and harmony. The cows stand like monumental, almost mythical silhouettes, a living reflection of collective identity. They are the economic, social, and symbolic heart of this Nilotic pastoral community in South Sudan.
This is an ethnographic scene where territory, cattle, and community intertwine in ancestral practices that continue to set the rhythm of daily life in Africa.
